14/1/2007---Arrive Karachi,By Yee

Finally it is time to start my trip.(And we are the first team to leave).
When I told the others that I am going to Pakistan, everyone was very surprise, and even more surprised when I told them that I will join a marine mammal conservation project there. ‘Are there any dolphins in Pakistan?’ this is a typical question people asked me.

Many people told me that Pakistan is a dangerous place to go, there may be bomb attacks, terrorists, crimes…… Are these really the true side of Pakistan?

I will tell you when I am back.

Actually there are direct flights from Hong Kong to Karachi around every two days, our destination, which is also the former capital of Pakistan. Karachi is also an important industrial city in Pakistan. However since we did not matched the schedule of the direct flight we chose to change our flight in Bangkok with my partner Noodle.

When we were in Bangkok we saw a lot of HongKongers around the airport, but when we check in and sat in the waiting room waiting for our flight to Karachi, we did not see any Hong Kong people there, instead there were Pakistani (mostly men with big beards and in traditional clothes), Chinese who speak Putonghua, Japanese and Westerners who were going to Pakistan probably for business. And, it is a bit strange for us-- two Chinese girls to wait here.

As our flight delayed for an hour in Bangkok and slow proceed in immigration counter in the Karachi Airport, we left Karachi Airport at around 11pm. And we immediately saw a Pakistani man holding a Panda Logo of WWF when we went out the airport, he was the driver who drove us to the house where we would stay for our whole trip. It was really sorry that we made him waited 2 hours in the airport!

The weather in Karachi was much finer than we expected (much warmer than what the weather report said and I found that half of the clothes in my luggage were useless here!). On the 1 hour driving from the airport to the Panda house where we stayed for our trip, in the dark I could still see how the city was like. I would describe it as Guangzhou in the 80s, there were some 6-7 storey tall apartments, which shops on the ground floor.

Finally we arrived Panda House at around 12mid night, Panda house is a house that WWF Pakistan used for the accommodation of staff members and guests to stay when they are in Karachi. The double room that they prepared for us was lovely and comfortable.

Seems that we had a good start, it is time to take a good rest and get everything ready for tomorrow’s training.
